先日のバラカン・ビートの「名盤片面」での話の続きです。

取り上げられたアルバムはポーグスの"If I Should Fall From Grace With God"でした。

バラカンさんはこの記事のについてかいつまんでお話ししていました。

そもそもこの曲がどうしてできたのか？

ポーグスの初期のプロデューサーでもあったエルヴィス・コステロがシェイン・マガウアンにクリスマスソングでヒットするようなものを作ってくれと言ったらしい。
During downtime of the recording, Costello reportedly dared MacGowan to write a hit Christmas song, thinking it a most preposterous thing.

シェインがスエーデンでツアー中に肺炎になり入院して高熱を出した時にもうろうとしている中でこの曲の構想を思いついたらしい。
In any case, MacGowan — whose relationship would eventually become fractured with his producer — got to work on the piece while in the throes of pneumonia-induced delirium, bedridden in Malmo, Sweden. After being given the raw matter of the melody and possible structure by string-player Jem Finer, MacGowan dreamed up an idea of December in New York City while in a hospital room tight to Oresund Sound, just across the water from Copenhagen.


それから実際に録音するまでに２年ぐらいかかり，最初はポーグスのベーシストのケイト・オーリアダン（コステロの前のガールフレンド）が歌うことになっていたのだけれど，最終的には，このアルバムをプロデュースしたスティーヴ・リリーホワイトが当時自分の妻だったカースティ・マッコールに歌わしたらどうだ？と言ってそういうことになったそうです。
The song was originally written as a duet for MacGowan and The Pogues’ bassist Cait O Riordin (Costello’s former girlfriend), but, two years after its original conception, Kirsty MacColl was asked to sing the female part, an idea suggested by producer Steve Lillywhite, who was also MacColl’s husband.
